Wild Ponies Packing List: Assateague Island

My friends and I are packing up for a weekend camping trip on Assateague Island - a national park on the beach where wild ponies roam. (If by chance you're also headed there this weekend, my pals are NOT the ones playing the bongos at 4 in the morning, ok?)

You could call me a "beginner" camper, but I'm more than ready for a commune with nature after a trip to Target for a sleeping bag and fold-up chair (worry not, someone else is in charge of the tent). Clothing choices are based on their ability to get dirty and play all day:

  • a sweat-wicking pullover,
  • a plaid button up shirt from my pop's closet (which I almost always wear on hikes: it's become my "get in trouble and maybe get wet shirt"),
  • a "B" cap from... I don't know how it came to me, truthfully,
  • another topper, a straw chapeau from Target bought many years ago, because someone always could use an extra hat,
  • a men's Land End Canvas rain jacket (my brother and all my guy friends want to steal this),
  • my new camping chair,
  • a Jordan jersey from my brother's childhood closet, because nothing is better for winning on a camping trip,
  • two bathing suits bought on clearance from Victoria's Secret, ideal for splashing in the ocean without flashing everyone, plus, one should always pack multiple bathing suits,
  • croakies and polarized Ray Ban aviators,
  • my baseball mitt and ball, because we like to play catch,
  • Nike shorts left over from my high school field hockey team uniform ,
  • cutoff shorts made from Old Navy men's jeans,
  • Adidas running shoes,
  • Chaco's,
  • my dad's backpack,
  • a new sleeping sac,
  • and lastly, everything goes into my Moroccan carpet bag, a closet sketches dream. This early sketch is the story of how I found it in a Chefchaouen market. Carrying a gear bag that's better suited for a library than a nylon tent probably steers this packing list towards glamping territory - but in my defense, I heard the Costco trip yielded quite a glamorous menu.

Cheers to the great outdoors,

LF
